Under-thought 1
"I like the way you use your vocabulary," said the young parking attendant as I pulled out of the building's garage. I was stunned. This casual compliment contradicted the insecurity I'd carried my whole life—that my vocabulary was somehow "off" or inadequate.
I remember what I said to him, though at the time it seemed like nothing special. Yet his unexpected compliment lingered with me long afterward. This interaction brought surprising confidence, much like an underpainting in art, which consists of the first layers that shape a final piece. Interactions such as these lay down a path, helping us move toward our truest selves.

A week later, I experienced another parking garage moment. As I approached the exit gate with its imposing barrier arm, I noticed both a payment machine and a small hut with an attendant inside. I bypassed the machine and drove directly to the person. Rolling down my window, I handed her my card and ticket while saying, "A machine or a person? I pick a person because a person is much better." She smiled widely and thanked me, then returned my card and said, "I took $2 off your payment," and winked. I could tell she was happy I'd chosen her over the machine. Her happiness made me happy too, and that brief human connection in an ordinary parking garage added a bright highlight—just a dab of vibrant color to the whole day!
